Everyone loves a sixties tune, whether it’s The Beatles, The Stones, or The Doors – the music, so instantly recognisable, is timeless.
But no one loves it more than those who lived through the iconic era! This week, The Ilkley ‘Tappers’ – a hugely talented U3A band, joined us live at Shipley Library where they performed in front of a full house.
You may be asking, why music? After all, it’s a library – a place where people come to read, not jive.
But libraries have changed and evolved over the years. They make fantastic venues for live music and events and our aim is to reach every generation, from babies through to nineties.
The Tappers’ audience were more senior in years but boy did they teach us all a thing or two about living. Watching many of them get up and dance, or sit and sway, tapping their feet or waving their arms, singing and laughing was so inspiring.
The band was fantastic. All of the members were retired or semi-retired but they just love playing and that joy, that connection, that enthusiasm, wove its way through the room and touched every single person who attended.
Many in the audience told me they ‘don’t usually go out‘ but had made the effort that day and none of them went away disappointed.
The event was organised as part of Loneliness Awareness Week.
We’ve all felt lonely at times – that quiet tug that leaves us feeling sad and almost afraid – whether it was a moment at school in the playground when friends gave the cold shoulder, or following a traumatic event in adulthood or in old age.
Loved-ones may disappear over time or never appear in the first place and this is where libraries can make a real difference.
Whether you want to escape into a new world, or make new connections in the real world, we are here for you.
Even if all you need is to sit in the presence of others.
